Elly Blake loves fairy tales, old houses, and owls. After earning a BA in English literature, she held a series of seemingly random jobs, including project manager, customs clerk, graphic designer, reporter for a local business magazine, and library assistant. She lives in Southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids, and a Siberian Husky mix who definitely shows Frostblood tendencies.
Elly’s debut novel, FROSTBLOOD (Little Brown Books for Young Readers (in US/Canada) Hodder & Stoughton (UK), January 17, 2017) is a YA Fantasy. In a world where flame and ice are mortal enemies, seventeen-year old Ruby has always hidden her power over fire. When a Frostblood warrior offers her a chance for revenge against the Frost King responsible for her mother’s death, she must learn to control her powers and save the kingdom from an ancient curse.
The two or three items she needs with her when she sits down to write: I need either silence or instrumental music (usually the Game of Thrones soundtrack or Tron Legacy soundtrack), a coffee or tea, and some idea of where I’m going in the scene.
The literary character she’d most like to meet: I would love to meet Dumbledore. I think he would be wonderful to chat with over tea. 🙂
Favorite childhood book: The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley.
Hobbies when she’s not writing/reading: I like drawing (badly), playing old Game Cube video games with my kids, and binge-watching TV shows. Napping is also a favorite pastime.
Her favorite Muppet and why: The Swedish chef because he is passionate about his job. 🙂
The craziest thing she did when she was 17: Tried to learn to ski in Switzerland while visiting relatives. I slid backwards down the beginner’s slope when I let go of the lift too soon, and later face-planted in a drift.
If she could travel anywhere in the world, where she’d go: I’d love to go to Iceland. Such beautiful landscapes and the northern lights!
